Gitanjali Song No 7 - Lyrics & Translation

Lyrics

Aamar e gaan chherechhe taar
Sakal alankaar
Tomar kachhe rakheni aar
Saajer ahankaar.
Alankaar je majhe pore
Milonete araal kore
Tomar kotha dhhake je taar
Mukhor jhankaar.

Tomar kachhe khate na mor
Kabir gorob kora.
Mahakabi, tomar paaye
Dite chai je dhora
Jibon loye joton kori
Jodi sakal banshi gori
Apon sure dibe bhori
Sakal chhidro taar.

Translation

For you this song has shed-
All decoration
For you it has ceded-
All pretension
For ornaments would block the way-
And mar our communion!
Your voice they mask-
With verbose commotion.

As a poet; before you it is futile-
To boast in self-adulation.
O' master poet; before you, to lay at your feet-
Is my ambition.
May my life be filled with dedication.
May my flute be crafted with precision.
May your melodies fill-
All its calibration.

Tagore's Translation.

MY song has put off her adornments.
She has no pride of dress and decoration.
Ornaments would mar our union;
they would come between thee and me;
their jingling would drown thy whispers.

My poet's vanity dies in shame before thy sight.
O master poet, I have sat down at thy feet.
Only let me make my life simple and straight,
like a flute of reed for thee to fill with music.
