Gitanjali Song No 8 - Lyrics & Translation

Lyrics

Rajar moton beshe tumi sajao shishure
Porao jaare maniratan haar
Kheladhula anondo taar sakali jaai ghure
Basan-bhushan hoy je bisham taar.
Chhenre pachhe aghaat laagi
Pachhe dhulaay hoy se daagi
Aponake taai sariye rakhe sabar hote dure
Cholte gele bhabona dhore taar.
Rajar moton beshe tumi sajao shishure
Porao jaare maniratan haar

Ki hobe Maa omontoro raajar moton saaje
Ki hobe oi maniratan haar'e
Duar khule dao jodi to chhuti pother majhe
Roudra baayu dhulakaar paare
Jethay bishwajaner mela
Samasta din nanan khela
Charidike biraat gaatha baje hajar soore
Sethai se paai na adhikaar.
Rajar moton beshe tumi sajao shishure
Porao jaare maniratan haar

Translation

Like a monarch when you dress up a child.
A necklace of jewels you make him wear
You rob him of the joys of the playful world-
The weight of the jewelled dress makes him forbear.
Lest it tears
Lest it discolors.
So he distances himself from all.
Even to move he is in fear.
Like a monarch when you dress up a child.
A necklace of jewels you make him wear

To what good, mother; is the king like finery-
For what good is heavy jewelry.
Throw open the doors for me to run through the alley.
The common men assembles where-
The common games they play there.
Where several tales ring through many a melody.
He is not allowed to enter there.
Like a monarch when you dress up a child.
A necklace of jewels you make him wear

Tagore's Translation.

THE CHILD WHO is decked with prince's robes
and who has jewelled chains round his neck loses all pleasure in his play;
his dress hampers him at every step.
In fear that it may be frayed,
or stained with dust he keeps himself from the world,
and is afraid even to move.
Mother, it is no gain, thy bondage of finery,
if it keep one shut off from the healthful dust of the earth,
if it rob one of the right of entrance
to the great fair of common human life.
